The Luohan bed is an ancient piece of furniture, belonging to the category of beds. It features a distinctive waist and wider middle section of the stretchers, with a large curved arc, commonly known as the "Luohan belly," hence the name "Luohan bed." Chinese Luohan beds are generally large in size, suitable for both lying down and sitting, and their primary function is to entertain guests. Today, it can be used for receiving guests as well as placed in the study to enhance elegance, making it an ideal piece of reclining furniture.

I. Waist
The waist is the recessed part between the top panel frame and the stretchers of the Luohan bed. Its function is to create a transition between the panel and the legs, significantly increasing the decorative and artistic space.
II. Lines
Lines refer to the stylistic lines formed by the edges of the cross-sections of the furniture components.
III. Legs and Feet
Ming and Qing Dynasty Luohan beds typically have two types of legs and feet: bulging legs with protruding teeth and three-bent legs. Bulging legs with protruding teeth have a consistent arc to the bottom, while three-bent legs have an outward curve midway through the arc, giving them a dignified and elegant appearance.
IV. Panels
Panels are the core decoration of Ming and Qing Dynasty Luohan beds, generally presented in four forms: various auspicious relief patterns, assembled patterns using joinery techniques, inlaid marble panels with colorful patterns, and natural wood grain patterns showcasing elegance and simplicity.
The most common type of panel is the three-screen style, with one panel in the back, left, and right. Followed by the five-screen style, with three panels in the back and one on each side. The seven-screen style is rare in Ming Dynasty Luohan beds and didn't become popular until the mid-Qing Dynasty. The three straight panels of the Ming Dynasty Luohan bed usually have straight edges and rounded corners. Only the upper corners where the left and right panels connect to the back panel are nearly right angles, but not completely.
V. Carving
Carving techniques on Luohan beds include relief carving, openwork carving, and sculpture in the round. Relief carving is a three-dimensional image protruding from a flat surface, with the back of the semi-three-dimensional image attached to a plane. Openwork carving involves carving through the wood to create hollow spaces. Sculpture in the round is a type of carving that is not attached to a background, having a real three-dimensional relationship, suitable for viewing from multiple angles.
